Vaccination, screening, physical activity, balanced nutrition and restorative sleep are evidence-based strategies aimed at clearly reducing risks. In this context, a similar discourse is sometimes used in osteopathy: visiting an osteopath regularly, even without symptoms, would supposedly help \u201cprevent\u201d the onset of pain or future physical problems.  <\/p><p> <\/p><p>At Aliantis Sitges, we prefer to adopt a more cautious and responsible position. Osteopathy can be a valuable therapeutic tool when there is a specific need, but it should not be presented as systematic prevention by default. Prevention means acting before a problem appears or demonstrably reducing the risk of it occurring. For that reason, intuition or a subjective feeling of wellbeing is not enough: clear objectives and measurable benefits are needed.  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c5ef452 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c5ef452\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Validated prevention and perceived prevention<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e5661d5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e5661d5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Some preventive measures have well-established usefulness: vaccination, stopping smoking, moving more, controlling certain risk factors or undergoing screening when indicated. By contrast, not everything that \u201cfeels good\u201d can automatically be considered prevention. <\/p><p> <\/p><p>In osteopathy, many people leave a session feeling relieved, more mobile or more comfortable. This can be valuable, but it does not necessarily prove that the session has prevented a future injury or condition. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ad065bb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ad065bb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why not all support is prevention<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c32d141 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c32d141\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSupporting someone, relieving tension or helping them feel better does not always mean preventing in the strict sense. Sometimes it is a one-off intervention, sometimes symptomatic support, and sometimes part of a broader therapeutic process. Calling it \u201cprevention\u201d without nuance can create confusion.  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a0c1376 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a0c1376\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why is prevention in osteopathy an attractive but debatable idea?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e390207 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e390207\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe idea of \u201ccoming every so often to prevent problems\u201d is appealing because it offers a sense of control. It suggests that pain can be anticipated and the body kept \u201cin order\u201d through regular appointments. But this narrative, even when well intentioned in some cases, may rely more on belief than on a truly demonstrated basis.  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a393cdf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a393cdf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The appeal of regularity<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cdb14f1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cdb14f1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMany people feel that if one session helped them once, repeating it periodically should help even more. And sometimes, from a clinical practice perspective, it can be tempting to support this logic because it conveys safety and continuity. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6271425 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6271425\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What should not be promised without nuance<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6b28035 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6b28035\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe problem appears when it is stated or implied that regularly visiting an osteopath will reliably prevent future low back pain, neck pain or tendinopathies. This relationship cannot be presented as a general certainty. The human body does not function like a machine that needs \u201cmandatory check-ups\u201d in every case, and pain does not appear simply because sessions are missing.  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-942a84b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"942a84b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">When the message creates dependence rather than autonomy<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5f188c7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5f188c7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIf a person starts to believe that their wellbeing always depends on returning to the treatment table at a fixed interval, they may gradually lose confidence in their own capacity to adapt. And this change in perception is not harmless. Health then stops being experienced as a dynamic and shared process, and begins to depend on an appointment maintained by inertia.  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-71995ac elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"71995ac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What risks can poorly framed prevention create?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-48590d1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"48590d1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBeyond the theoretical issue, insisting on periodic sessions without a clear indication can have undesirable effects.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-54d5b71 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"54d5b71\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">False beliefs about the body<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ae3401d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ae3401d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOne of the most frequent consequences is reinforcing the idea that the body \u201cgets blocked\u201d, \u201cgoes out of alignment\u201d or \u201cdoes not function properly on its own\u201d if it is not treated regularly. This view can lead a person to interpret any normal or temporary discomfort as a sign that they urgently need treatment. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e0e8bf7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e0e8bf7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Therapeutic dependence<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5689ba3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5689ba3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhen the patient feels that they will only be well if they return again and again, the therapeutic relationship risks becoming dependent. Low back pain, headache, radiating pain or persistent fatigue may require another type of investigation.
