Ice was recommended for almost every recent injury, while heat was reserved for muscle tightness or long-lasting pain. It was an easy rule to remember and became standard practice among both healthcare professionals and athletes.  <\/p><p> <\/p><p class=\"p1\">However, our understanding of pain and recovery has evolved considerably.<\/p><p> <\/p><p class=\"p1\">Today, the more useful question is not simply: <span class=\"s1\"><b>\u201cShould I use cold or heat?\u201d<\/b><\/span>. Many people experience relief during treatment or shortly afterwards, making everyday activities such as walking, lifting an arm or turning the neck easier. <\/p><p> <\/p><p>However, this effect is usually temporary.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>Neither cold nor heat <a href=\"https:\/\/aliantis.es\/en\/2026\/03\/26\/tissue-recovery-time-how-long-does-an-injury-take-to-heal\/\">directly rebuilds a ligament, repairs damaged muscle fibres or makes an injury disappear on its own<\/a>.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>Does that mean they are useless? Quite the opposite. <\/p><p> <\/p><p>By temporarily reducing pain, they may help you regain movement sooner, return gradually to your normal activities and perform the exercises that promote recovery.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>In other words, cold and heat are useful tools that can support the recovery process, but they are rarely the treatment itself.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ba3546e e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"ba3546e\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-62b7cf1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"62b7cf1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"p1\">\ud83d\udca1 <b>Common myth<\/b><\/p><p> <\/p><p><strong>\u201cIf my pain improves after applying ice, it means the injury has healed.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p> <\/p><p>Not necessarily.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>Pain intensity and tissue healing do not always progress at the same pace.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>It is possible to feel immediate relief after applying cold or heat even though the injury has not fully healed. Likewise, some people continue to experience pain even after the tissues have largely recovered. <\/p><p> <\/p><p>For this reason, recovery should not be assessed solely by pain levels, but also by the gradual return of mobility, strength and the ability to perform everyday activities.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-83ae57d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"83ae57d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Understanding pain: much more than a tissue problem<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4aac772 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4aac772\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For many years, pain was thought to be a simple reflection of the condition of the tissues. The more severe the injury, the greater the pain was expected to be. <\/p><p> <\/p><p>Today, we know that this relationship does not always exist.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>Research in neuroscience has shown that pain is a complex experience influenced by many factors. In addition to the condition of muscles, ligaments and joints, stress, sleep, emotions, previous experiences, beliefs about the injury and even the surrounding environment all play a role. <\/p><p> <\/p><p>This is what we know as the <a href=\"https:\/\/aliantis.es\/en\/2026\/03\/26\/the-biopsychosocial-model-of-pain-understanding-pain-beyond-injury\/\">biopsychosocial (BPS) model of pain<\/a>.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>This does not mean that pain is \u201cpsychological\u201d or that the injury is not real. It means that the nervous system constantly integrates all the available information to determine how much protection the body needs at any given moment. <\/p><p> <\/p><p>That is why two people with almost identical injuries can experience very different levels of pain.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>Within this model, both cold and heat can help in several ways. Today we know that, except in very specific situations, remaining completely inactive for too long can actually delay recovery. <\/p><p> <\/p><p>That is why we talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/aliantis.es\/en\/2026\/07\/29\/postoperative-lymphatic-drainage-recover-better-after-surgery\/\">relative rest<\/a>.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>Relative rest means temporarily adapting activities that increase pain without stopping movement altogether. The goal is to find the right balance between protecting the injured area and providing the body with the stimulation it needs to recover. <\/p><p> <\/p><p>In this context, cold and heat take on a much more meaningful role.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>Not because they directly accelerate tissue healing, but because they may reduce pain enough to make gradual movement possible.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>In other words, perhaps the most useful question is not \u201cWhich is better: cold or heat?\u201d, but rather: \u201cWhich one helps me move a little better today?\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aebd078 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"aebd078\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-09cab56 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"09cab56\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"p1\">\ud83c\udfc3 <strong><span class=\"s2\">In practice<\/span><\/strong><br \/><\/p><p> <\/p><p>If applying cold allows you to walk with less pain or move your ankle more comfortably, it is probably serving its purpose.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>If a hot shower makes your neck feel less stiff and allows you to perform your mobility exercises more comfortably, it is also doing its job.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>In both cases, the real benefit is not the temperature itself, but what that temporary improvement allows you to do afterwards.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-46b19e9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"46b19e9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">When can cold be useful?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-19c2074 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"19c2074\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If you have just suffered a sprain, a blow or a muscle strain, you have probably been told to \u201cput ice on it as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p><p> <\/p><p>This advice has been part of routine practice for decades, and while it still makes sense in certain situations, we now know that it deserves some important nuances.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>Cold can be particularly useful when the pain is recent and the area feels sensitive, inflamed or warm. Many people experience rapid pain relief during its application, allowing them to walk more comfortably, bear weight more easily or move a joint with less discomfort. <\/p><p> <\/p><p>That relief may be enough to help you begin restoring movement from the very first days.<\/p><p>And that is probably its greatest value.<\/p><p>Not because ice \u201cheals\u201d the injury, but because it can help you return to appropriate movement sooner.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f46127d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f46127d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Does that mean you should always use ice?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6dbffad elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6dbffad\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Not necessarily.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>For many years, the well-known RICE protocol (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) was taught as the standard strategy after an acute injury.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>Over time, research has questioned some of its principles.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>Today we know that using ice as the only intervention has not been clearly shown to speed recovery from injuries such as a lateral ankle sprain. Once that goal has been achieved, prolonging its use usually provides little additional benefit. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ccc3854 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ccc3854\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Should we try to eliminate inflammation?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4fa8fd4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4fa8fd4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This is probably one of the ideas that has changed the most in recent years.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>For a long time, inflammation was viewed as a harmful process that should be reduced as quickly as possible.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>Today we know that reality is much more complex.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>Inflammation is a normal part of the body\u2019s response to injury. It brings the cells and signalling molecules needed to initiate tissue repair. Without this biological response, healing would be much more difficult.  <\/p><p> <\/p><p>This does not mean that all inflammation is beneficial or that it should be ignored when it causes significant pain or severely limits function. In many cases, it is simply part of the body\u2019s normal response. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2054893 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2054893\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How should you apply ice correctly?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-446d268 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"446d268\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There\u2019s no need for complicated techniques or prolonged ice applications.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>In most cases, applying ice for 10 to 15 minutes is sufficient. Always protect the skin with a towel or cloth to reduce the risk of skin injury.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>If it provides relief, you can repeat the application several times throughout the day, allowing enough time between sessions for your skin to return to its normal temperature.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>The cold should feel intense but tolerable.
