Why do joints crack?

Our bodies are designed to move. Every joint is made up of bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, a joint capsule and a lubricating fluid called synovial fluid. These structures work together constantly and can sometimes produce perfectly normal sounds.

What causes a joint to crack?

A common misconception is that a cracking sound means the bones are rubbing against each other. In reality, this is rarely the case.

Joint noises can result from several different mechanisms. They may be caused by the normal movement of joint surfaces, changes in pressure within the synovial fluid, a tendon moving over a bony prominence or the movement of soft tissues surrounding the joint.

All of these mechanisms can produce a sound without indicating any injury or damage.

Why a cracking joint is usually nothing to worry about

One of the most common myths is that every joint noise signals a problem.

In reality, many people have noisy joints for years without experiencing any pain or limitations. On the other hand, it is entirely possible to have a significant injury without hearing any cracking at all.

Knee crepitus

Some people describe a sensation similar to “grinding”, “crunching” or “rice crispies” when climbing stairs, squatting or getting up from a chair.

This type of joint noise is very common in both younger and older adults and does not necessarily mean you have osteoarthritis.

When knee crepitus is associated with pain, current international guidelines recommend focusing primarily on therapeutic exercise, muscle strengthening, education and a gradual return to activity.

A snapping tendon

At the hip, shoulder, wrist or ankle, some people experience a snapping or clicking sensation that occurs during the same movement every time.

This is often caused by a tendon moving over a bony prominence.

As long as it is painless, this is usually harmless. However, if it becomes painful or starts limiting your activities, a personalised programme focusing on mobility, strength and load management can often make a significant difference.

Clicking in the jaw

Jaw clicking is also very common.

Many people experience clicking in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) for years without developing any significant problems. However, if the clicking is accompanied by pain, difficulty opening the mouth or episodes of locking, it is advisable to seek professional assessment.

Many perfectly healthy joints naturally produce sounds during movement. What matters is not the noise itself, but whether it is associated with pain, swelling, reduced movement or instability.

Why do some joints crack more than others?

Some joints naturally make more noise than others because they are subjected to greater loads throughout the day and are surrounded by numerous muscles and tendons. As a result, it is perfectly normal for certain areas of the body to produce more cracking, clicking or popping sounds.

Why does my knee crack?

The knee supports much of your body weight and is involved in almost every movement you make, whether you’re walking, climbing stairs, running or squatting.

For this reason, cracking and crepitus are especially common in the knee.

If there is no pain or swelling, a cracking knee rarely requires treatment. However, when pain develops, it is far more useful to assess how well the knee tolerates movement and loading than to focus solely on the noise itself. Why does my shoulder crack?

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the human body.

This exceptional range of motion relies on a complex interaction between muscles, tendons and ligaments to keep the joint stable. As a result, it is not unusual to hear clicking or popping sounds when lifting the arm or during sporting activities.

If these sounds are not accompanied by pain, weakness or loss of function, they are usually considered completely normal.

Why does my hip click?

The so-called snapping hip syndrome is relatively common.

It occurs when a tendon moves over a bony prominence during certain movements. Although the sound can be quite noticeable, it is usually harmless.

If the clicking becomes painful, a personalised exercise programme focusing on hip mobility, muscle strength and movement control is generally the most effective approach.

Why do my back and neck crack?

The spine is probably the area of the body where joint cracking is noticed most often. After spending several hours sitting at a desk or remaining in the same position, many people naturally stretch or rotate their neck and back, sometimes producing one or more cracking sounds.

In most cases, these noises are simply part of the normal mechanics of the spinal joints and do not mean that a vertebra is “out of place” or has been “put back into alignment.

If the cracking occurs on its own and is not associated with pain, weakness or changes in sensation, it is generally not a cause for concern.

However, if cracking is accompanied by severe pain, numbness, tingling, muscle weakness or symptoms radiating into an arm or a leg, it is important to seek medical assessment.

Is it normal for my knuckles to crack?

Yes.

Knuckle cracking is extremely common and, despite what many people have been told, current scientific evidence has not shown that it causes osteoarthritis.

The sound does not come from bones rubbing together but from a physical phenomenon occurring inside the joint.

Some people never feel the need to crack their knuckles, while others do it regularly. Both situations are perfectly normal.

Once a joint has cracked, it usually takes 20 to 30 minutes before it can produce the same sound again. This is because the gases within the synovial fluid need time to dissolve back into the joint fluid.

Is cracking your joints bad for you?

This is one of the most common questions we hear in the clinic.

Many people crack their fingers, neck or back because it provides an immediate feeling of relief. But is this habit actually harmful?

Does cracking your knuckles cause arthritis?

No.

Despite being one of the most persistent myths about joints, research has found no evidence that cracking your knuckles increases the risk of developing osteoarthritis.

That said, constantly cracking the same joint because it always feels stiff or uncomfortable may be a sign that something else deserves attention. Rather than repeatedly seeking temporary relief, it is often more helpful to understand why the sensation keeps returning.

Why does cracking a joint feel good?

Many people report an immediate feeling of release, improved mobility or reduced stiffness after a joint cracks.

This sensation is genuine. However, it does not mean that a joint has been put back into place.

Current evidence suggests that the feeling of relief is mainly related to temporary changes in how the nervous system processes movement, muscle tension and pain.

In other words, the cracking sound itself is not what produces the therapeutic effect. It simply accompanies certain movements.

Joint cracking in osteopathy: what is really happening?

For many people, osteopathy is closely associated with the familiar “crack.” In reality, however, the science behind this phenomenon is far more interesting than many people realise.

Why do some osteopathic techniques produce a cracking sound?

During certain manual techniques, a characteristic popping sound may be heard.

This phenomenon is known as joint cavitation.

When two joint surfaces separate rapidly, the pressure inside the joint briefly decreases. This causes tiny gas bubbles to form within the synovial fluid, producing the familiar cracking sound.

This is a normal physical event. In most cases, it is painless and does not damage the joint.

Is a treatment more effective if the joint cracks?

No.

This is probably one of the most widespread misconceptions about osteopathy.

A manipulation that produces a crack is not more effective than one that doesn’t. Likewise, a treatment session during which several joints crack is not necessarily better than a completely silent session.

A joint that suddenly locks, repeatedly gives way or becomes unstable should also be evaluated.

Finally, if cracking in the neck or back is accompanied by numbness, persistent tingling, muscle weakness, balance problems or symptoms radiating into the arm or leg, medical assessment is recommended.

The important message is simple: it is not the sound that matters most, but the symptoms that accompany it.

What should you do if your joints crack?

For most people, the best approach is surprisingly simple: keep moving.

Stay active

For many years, rest was routinely recommended for painful joints. Today, international clinical guidelines consistently recommend maintaining an appropriate level of physical activity whenever possible.

Regular movement helps maintain joint mobility, preserve muscle strength and improve the body’s ability to tolerate everyday activities.

The goal is not to ignore pain, but to gradually restore confidence in movement.

Adapt your activity instead of stopping completely

If a particular movement becomes painful, reducing its intensity temporarily is usually more effective than stopping it altogether.

Modifying training, reducing repetitive loading or temporarily adjusting certain activities often allows symptoms to settle while maintaining overall fitness.

This gradual approach generally leads to better long-term outcomes than prolonged rest.

Common mistakes

One of the biggest mistakes is believing that every joint should become completely silent.

The reality is that many healthy people will continue to have noisy joints throughout their lives without ever developing a problem.

Another common mistake is relying solely on passive treatments. Modern rehabilitation focuses on helping people understand their condition, remain active and progressively rebuild strength and confidence.
